Renovating the Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories

The Union’s largest project in a generation. With your help, every boy at the Sierra Leone Grammar School will learn science the way it should be learned — hands on, safely, with the right equipment.

Why it matters

Science cannot be learned from the blackboard alone

For generations the Grammar School has sent its sons into medicine, engineering, the sciences and public life. Many of them remember the moment science came alive — the first titration that turned the right colour, the circuit that finally lit the bulb, the cell seen for the first time under a microscope.

Today’s boys deserve the same. But years of heavy use have left the school’s laboratories in urgent need of renewal: wiring that is no longer safe, gas and water lines that no longer reach the benches, worn furniture and too little working apparatus for full classes. Teachers do their best, yet too many practicals end up as demonstrations instead of experiments.

The Improvement Committee of the Old Boys Union has made the complete renovation of all three laboratories its first priority. It is a large undertaking, and it will only succeed if every Regentonian plays a part.

Safety first

Old wiring, missing gas fittings and poor ventilation make full practical classes unsafe. Renovation removes those risks for pupils and teachers.

Better results

WASSCE science papers test practical skills. Boys who handle real apparatus understand more, and do better in their examinations.

Future careers

Medicine, engineering, agriculture and technology all start at a lab bench. Sierra Leone needs these scientists — many will be Regentonians.

The planned design

  • Junior Lab

Island benches with built-in sinks, a whiteboard wall and science displays.

  • Senior Lab

Long perimeter and centre benches with storage beneath and bright, even light.

  • Junior Lab

Practical work at every bench: glassware, stands and burners within reach.

  • Senior Lab

Room for full classes, with clear sightlines to the teacher’s demonstration bench.

  • Lab Technician Office

A dedicated office and preparation space for the laboratory technician.

  • Storage Room

Secure, glass-fronted cabinets for apparatus and chemicals.

The plan

Three laboratories, one complete renovation

Each laboratory has been assessed with the school’s science teachers. These are the works and equipment each one needs.

Senior Lab

Physics Laboratory

Safe power, sturdy benches and working apparatus so every boy can measure, test and prove — not just copy from the board.

  • Full electrical rewiring with protected bench sockets
  • Hard-wearing work benches and stools
  • Apparatus: meters, optics kits, mechanics sets, power supplies
  • Lockable apparatus store and preparation room

Estimated cost
Le 1,050,000

Junior Lab

Chemistry Laboratory

Gas, water and ventilation done properly, so practical chemistry can be taught safely to full classes.

  • Fume cupboard and room ventilation
  • Gas and water lines to every bench, with sinks
  • Chemical-resistant bench tops and reagent storage
  • Safety: eye-wash station, fire blankets, extinguishers, first aid

Estimated cost
Le 1,400,000

Fund the Chemistry lab
Junior Lab

Biology Laboratory

Microscopes, specimens and good light, so the living world can be studied up close.

  • Class set of student microscopes
  • Specimen and slide storage
  • Improved lighting and window repairs
  • Preparation area with running water

Estimated cost
Le 1,050,000

Fund the Biology lab

Shared works across all three laboratories

  • Roof, ceiling and floor repairs
  • Solar back-up so practicals are not cancelled during power cuts
  • Fresh paint, signage and safety notices
  • Teacher training on new equipment

Progress

Where the project stands

  1. Complete

    Assessment

Engineers and science teachers survey all three laboratories and agree a costed plan with the school.

Our promise of accountability

Funds for the appeal are held separately and spent only on the laboratories. The Improvement Committee publishes progress on this page and presents full accounts at the Annual General Meeting. Alumni associations abroad, including our North American and UK brothers, are also raising funds for science at the school — together we can finish the job.
